AFCANSW Executive

AFCANSW Chairperson Annie HopkinsChairperson – Annie Hopkins

During my career as a performing arts teacher my practice was informed largely by the welfare needs of my students and their families. Additional studies in the field of Special Education and Counselling has allowed me to engage on a therapeutic level to afford those that are vulnerable and marginalised support and advocacy to acquire equity and social justice. I am passionate about the role counselling plays in assisting young people and their families to resolve issues, articulate and clarify personal goals and move forward to a richer and more meaningful life. I have a supportive, wonderful family that keep me grounded and remind me every day of the importance of love and compassion in all we do. I am a musician and a published poet. These areas of my life keep me sane.

AFCANSW Vice Chairperson David LinehanVice Chairperson – David Linehan

Having returned home to Australia early in 2013 I was privileged to take up the position of Adolescent and Family Counsellor at Woodrising Neighbourhood Centre at West Lake Macquarie. I have a passion for working with young people and their families.  Having received a wonderful welcome from my colleagues in AFCA, I was humbled to be recently voted onto the state executive of the association. From an electrical trade background, I migrated to Australia almost 24 years ago from Ireland. I changed career paths in the 1990’s when I got the opportunity to study Psychology at the University of Newcastle. My continuing ambition is to support young people and their families as they positively work through issues that are impacting on their lives and to provide a safe counselling environment supporting life choices for healing.

AFCANSW Secretary Deb WaltonSecretary – Deb Walton

Sometimes I feel quite amazed to think that I’ve been an AFC for 16 years now! What a privilege it is to work with young people and families in the ways that we do. My practice is driven by a lifelong interest in social justice and in working in respectful and hopeful ways with those who consult with me. Outside of being an AFC I enjoy being part of a great family, spending time with our wonderful collection of rescue pets, enjoying music, reading and art, and loving life on this amazing and precious planet.

AFCANSW Treasurer Michael BurkeTreasurer – Michael Burke

I have always been interested in providing support to young people and families navigating tough times. I came to the Adolescent and Family Counselling role after a number of years working with young people at risk of homelessness, through the Reconnect program, and working with men exiting correctional centres and rengaging with community. I spend my personal time with my partner and 2 kids, teaching taekwondo and more recently learning to surf again.
